School of Biology RAE 2008

In the 2008 University Research Assessment Exercise 95% of our research was judged to be internationally recognised, excellent or world leading. Only one other Biology department in the UK did better in these terms. This is an outstanding achievement and because we included almost all of our academic staff (92%) shows our consistent strength across biological sciences at St Andrews. We have particular research strengths in Biomolecular Sciences; Cell & Systems Biology; Evolution, Ecology & Animal Behaviour and Marine Biology and the RAE assessment included all of these disciplines. The school has attracted £45M in research income over the RAE period and we are well positioned to take advantage of future research challenges and opportunities. The RAE outcome consolidates our position as an international research department and emphasises the overall quality of our staff. This complements our excellent grading in teaching quality and our commitment to research-led scholarship.
