£477K NERC Award

Dr P Pomeroy, Sea Mammal Research Unit has received funding from NERC (£477K) and the Esmée Fairburn Foundation (£49K) to examine how seal populations are changing around the UK. New software will be developed allowing digital comparison of natural markings on seals to extend existing capture-mark-recapture studies with CREEM, St Andrews. Working with Lex Hiby, Conservation Research and Dr S Twiss, University of Durham, thousands of images collected during long term seal studies will be included for analysis. Provision of this expertise across a network of users will make the group an international focus for such work.
