News Item:
Interaction of influenza

Professor Rick Randall has received grant funding for studies on the interaction of influenza. Both epidemic and pandemic outbreaks of influenza are extremely serious threats to human and animal health. Worldwide there is thus a great deal of ongoing scientific research to try and better control influenza outbreaks through the use of public control measures, vaccination and the development of anti-viral drugs. He has recently identified an interaction (that has not been previously reported) between an influenza virus protein, termed NS1, and a cellular protein, termed P13 kinase. In this project he will examine the fundamental reasons why the virus interacts with this cellular protein, describe the structural basis of how this interaction occurs and use the information generated to begin to develop novel anti-influenza virus drugs.
